What is a breast form?

A breast form (or breast prosthesis) is designed to look like your natural breast. It is made out of silicone, foam, or fiberfill. They come in various sizes, shapes and design.

Do I need a breast form if I had a lumpectomy?

Possibly. A silicone shell may help to even out breast size of smooth over incision areas.

How soon after surgery can I wear a breast form?

Your doctor will decide when you have healed sufficiently to wear a breast form. A fiberfill form & bra may be prescribed within a few weeks after surgery. A silicone form may be prescribed 5 to 8 weeks after surgery.

Why should I wear a breast form?

In addition to making you feel and look natural, a weighted breast form will give your body physical balance. Without the balance you may have back, neck, and posture problems.

Do I choose my bras?

Most insurance companies cover a basic mastectomy bra. If you want a more expensive bra, you may have to pay an additional price, or pay for these directly. Active Life has a wide selection of brands and styles; plain or fancy lace. They are all beautiful and well made.

Why do I have to be fit with a mastectomy bra?

An important part of a beautiful fit is your bra. By taking some measurements and evaluating your shape, We can make sure you receive a correct fit. It is important to have the form fit snugly against your body in a natural position.

What makes a mastectomy bra different?

All mastectomy bras have pockets to hold the form securely in place. Some bras may have a higher cut, side pockets for under arm balance, snuggle bands, front plus back closures, back strap adjustments, and more.

Can I wear my breast form in a swimming pool, or at the beach?

A silicone form is made to withstand the same temperature as your body. You may swim in a chlorinated pool, hot tub, and ocean.

What type of swimsuit can I wear?

A mastectomy swimsuit, designed to discretely conceal your breast form can be ordered, or you can sew a pocket to hold your form in your own swimsuit.

How do I take care of my breast form?

A silicone form should be washed with mild soap and water, and patted dry daily. A fitted cloth cover worn over your silicone form will protect your prosthesis. A silicone form should be stored in its case. Foam or fiberfill forms should be hand washed and air dryed as needed.

How many bras can I get?

Most insurance companies allow 2 to 6 bras per year. However, if you should change form size they may pay for more.

How long will my breast form last?

Most silicone forms are warranted for 2 years. Foam and fiberfill are warranted for 1 year. With proper use, care, and storage, you may get many years of use.

Are breast forms and mastectomy bras covered by my insurance?

Recent laws have passed requiring all insurance companies to cover forms and bras. In our office, we bill your insurance directly. You may be responsible for deductibles or co-pays, or need prior authorization.

How often can I get a new form?

You can usually get a new form every 1 to 2 years. However, if you lose or gain weight, a new form may be medically necessary.

Do I need more than one form?

Some patients prefer to wear a silicone form in the day and a fiberfill form in the evening or for sleeping.

Do I need a prescription?

With a prescription we can bill your insurance and avoid charging you sales tax. Otherwise, no prescription is necessary.

Which doctor will prescribe my form and bras?

Any medical doctor can prescribe for you, such as your surgeon, or primary care physician. After your initial fitting, we recommend asking for a prescription yearly when you get your annual exam.

Is there a charge for a consultation?

No. There is no charge to you or your insurance company for a consultation.

What is a certified mastectomy fitter?

A certified mastectomy fitter takes special courses on the proper techniques of fitting breast forms and mastectomy bras. Our fitters have many years of experience working with patients just like you. Our facility is accredited by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics & Prosthetics.

What is your office like?

Our office is in a professional building, similar to a doctor’s office. We will work with you in a private fitting room. It is not a boutique. Our Facility is Accredited by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics & Prosthetics.

Will anyone notice I am wearing a breast form?

No! With a good fitting bra and the “right” form you will appear very natural and similar to how you looked before your surgery.

Will wearing a breast form restrict my activities?

Not at all. You can participate in most activites, including golf, tennis, and even swimming. Shopping for clothes is a favorite activity.
